Everywhere you look there are drug and alcohol treatment programs and some of them offer a little family therapy. But, if you love someone who struggles with addiction, you need help and support too. That help is not so easy to find. One possible source of support is Al-anon. These support groups are an amazing resource where you can meet other people experiencing the same struggles as you. It is free and there are lots of meetings in almost every city. But there are also lots of people who are not comfortable, ready or able to attend these support groups.
If al-anon is not right for you, consider seeing a therapist or counselor for support. They can help you to learn about addiction, enabling, boundaries and so much more. They can help you to see that you are not crazy. Check out my blog posts for more information about how therapy can help you pull yourself out of the destructive cycle of addiction. You will begin to see how you have control over your life and decisions. You will begin to feel stronger and more secure in your decisions. You will learn how to care about an addict without having your life taken over or destroyed by their addiction and their choices. |
